When Should You Replace Your Home Furniture?
Furniture, especially when properly taken care of, can last for several years — hence why we have one of those furniture pieces that was passed down from generation to generation in the family. However, it also doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t replace your furniture. Like anything else in life, every piece of furniture has an expiration date, they just vary depending on the materials, frequency of use, how they were built, and how well they were maintained.
Living Room
- Sofa or Couch
It’s easy to determine when to replace your sofa or couch because it’s pretty much obvious. When the cushion turns saggy and it begins to smell, its upholstery peels and falls off, and the fabric cracks or rips, that’s a very apparent sign that you have to start looking for a new sofa or at least have it re-upholstered. Another factor is when the lumbar support is not as functional anymore, and seems to be uncomfortable to rest and lean on.
Lifespan of a sofa or couch: between 7 and 15 years
- Coffee Table, End Table
If you are not that cautious about placing hot things such as coffee or wet stuff like moist, cold drinks on your coffee table or end table, then chances are, it has caused quite a lot of wear and tear. But if you are able to take care of your furniture at home, you won’t need to replace your coffee table and end table that soon — unless it incurs damages and becomes wobbly or it doesn’t match well with other furniture pieces and the style you’re aiming for.
Lifespan of a coffee table, end table: anywhere from 5 to 20 years
- Upholstered Chair
Same with a sofa or couch, you’ll know that it’s time to replace an upholstered chair when its upholstery starts to crack, smell, peel off, and its cushions begin to sag a little bit too much. If you have an upholstered reclining chair, you’ll do well to replace them when its reclining functions do not work or run as smoothly as it should anymore.
Lifespan of an upholstered chair: 7 to 15 years
Bedroom
- Bed Frame
A creaking bed doesn’t sound all too good and may be a sign that it’s beginning to wobble and become unstable. Worse case, it won’t be strong enough to hold a person’s weight while sleeping. Another reason to replace a bed frame is when a child begins to outgrow the bed and may need to get a large size. For others, a wobbly or small-sized bed frame isn’t the problem, but it’s more of a preference since the bed frame doesn’t suit their needs and idea of what will match well with other furniture items in the bedroom.
Lifespan of a bed frame: 10 to 20 years
- Nightstand
Nightstands don’t need to be replaced that often, especially if it’s made with quality materials and proper furniture care and maintenance is done. But like any other furniture in this list, you will know that it’s time to replace your nightstand when its legs start to become rickety, the paint chips off, or the finish cracks and fades.
- Dresser
May it be a chest of drawers or a dresser, you should replace it when it is no longer functioning, is unsteady, and the drawers are unable to open and close properly. But if you were able to take care of it, it won’t incur much wear and tear, so you can still continue using your dresser for more years to come.
Lifespan of a dresser: 10 to 20 years
Dining Room
- Dining Table
Dining tables can last for several years, and even more when it is well-maintained. Of course, dining tables that have cheaper designs and are made with less durable materials will most likely have a shorter life span compared to those that were made with quality and durable materials. When its legs and tabletop incurs discolorations, scratches, dents, and the legs become wobbly and uneven, that’s a signal for a replacement. In other cases, it may need to be replaced to fit the space available or number of house members.
Lifespan of a dining table: 5 to 20 years
- Dining Chairs
May it be a wooden dining chair or an upholstered chair with metal legs, if it becomes wobbly and unstable or if the upholstery starts to peel off and crack, you should consider getting your dining chairs replaced. The lifespan of dining chairs also depends on the quality of materials used in making them.
Lifespan of dining chairs: 10 to 15 years
Home Office/Study Room
- Desk
If your working style doesn’t suit the size of the desk, then think about looking for a new desk option. Other reasons to replace your desk also include unsteady legs and defective drawers. But if it’s just a minor defect, it can still be repaired. Your desk should be able to assist and bring convenience to you while working or studying, so it’s essential to find one that best fits your needs.

- Office Chair
The life of an office chair would more or less depend on how often you use it, what materials were used to make it, or how it was designed. But you’ll know that it needs to be replaced when it is not functioning properly and the lumbar support is not able to provide the right support and comfort.

Outdoor Area
- Patio Furniture
Outdoor furniture can be susceptible to wear and tear since they are mostly exposed to the sun and sudden changes in weather. That’s why it’s important to keep them well-maintained, away from direct sunlight (as much as possible), and consider storing them when not in use. You can opt to replace your patio furniture when it becomes shaky, unstable, and unable to hold the weight of an adult. Take note that the lifespan of your patio furniture can also vary depending on its quality — so this means that a good quality patio furniture can last longer than those that are made with low-quality materials.
Lifespan of patio furniture: 15 years or more
Knowing and understanding when to replace your home furniture isn’t really rocket science. You don’t need heavy signs or clues to determine them because it just shows. Keeping furniture items that do not function properly will only become clutter at home, so it’s ideal to let them go and opt to purchase a new one.
