10 Ways to Improve Your Old Furniture
Do you own a furniture item that has the same age as you or even older than you? If you’re not planning to buy a new one, why don’t you upgrade and improve your old furniture?
Without further ado, here are 10 ways to improve your old furniture at home:
1. Decorate the surface
If you have plain old furniture like cabinets, tables, and wooden sofa, why not try to decorate it! Add some patterns on your old furniture to give it a new look by stenciling it. To make it more creative, paint the whole surface or just the pattern on it.
2. Paint Your Old Furniture
Does your old furniture look dull as time goes by? If you’re tired of oak or woody colors, you can paint it with colors that you like. If you’re feeling adventurous, try painting your old furniture with some bold colors or colors you’ve never tried before. But if you have a theme for your home, look for some recommendations to help you decide on which color you’re going to use.
3. Make a Cover Cloth
If your sofas and dining table are still fine why not try and upgrade them by investing on a cover cloth. This is one of the easiest ways to make your old furniture look better and functional because all you have to do is cover the surface of your old furniture. You can also use cloth or any fabrics over the divider of the cabinet. Try to experiment on the fabrics you’re going to use such as linen fabric.
4. Recover Your Dining Chairs
Are your dining chairs starting to not feel comfortable to be seated on? You can try putting a cushion or a leather upholstery on your dining chairs. For wood materials, a good tip to recover them and make them look new is to put varnish.
5. Try Replacing the Legs
If you own a piece of classic old furniture, experiment on them by changing its legs. Try painting it in different colors or resize them based on your taste. You can mix and match the legs, put washi tapes over it, or buy hairpin legs for replacement.
6. Put Self-Adhesive Sticker
This is for folks who don’t like their hands to get dirty. Instead of painting or stenciling your old furniture, why not put a self-adhesive sticker on? Unlike painting, these stickers have different colors and designs to choose from. It’s also easy to attach on the surface of your old furniture and you wouldn’t have to wait for it to dry.
7. Molding
For old furniture like cabinets and bookshelves, add molding on them to give them a new look for your home. This way is perfect for you if you love the classic style look. But you can always incorporate it with a modern look based on your preference.
8. Spray paint your old furniture
Another way to color your old furniture is by spray painting it. This is for you if you like oil-based paint on your furniture and a glossy finish to its surface. What is good with spray paint, is you can have an even coverage to your old furniture, plus it dries faster than with brush and roll-on painting.
9. Use them for other purposes
Before buying new pieces of furniture, you must think twice if you’re ready to give up this piece and replace it with something new, or you can always use them again, but with other purposes. If you have an old center table, use them as a side table in your bedroom. For old bookshelves, turn them into your kitchen storage, so you won’t have any problems in buying a new one.
10. Refinishing
If you own a wood type furniture and you don’t want to do anything with it, like painting and such, you just need to restore it. Fill-out your old furniture if there’s a crack or replace the handle if you need to. Just use some sandpaper and varnish to make your old furniture look brand new.
