Types of Manufactured Wood
Wondering why some furniture are way cheaper than others, irregardless of design and size? Let’s try looking at the components.
Furniture made using manufactured wood has become a mainstay in the home furnishings business because it offers a lower price tag, while not necessarily compromising durability and quality. In fact, most people cannot tell the difference between a pure solid wood furniture and a veneer cabinet aesthetics-wise, but checking the price will reveal that the other costs thrice as much.
Types of Manufactured Wood
1. Particleboard or Chipboard
Particleboards are made by bonding sawdust and shavings with resin. The result is a less dense and inexpensive flat board (compared to fiberboards). Usually used in low-end furniture for it’s low-cost manufacturing. Manufacturers typically add a veneer surface to make the material more resistant to stains, and to enhance the furniture’s overall look.
2. Fiberboard
Fiberboards are made by reducing the wood into small chips and then heated to become fibers, and these fibers are then dried and bonded together using a synthetic resin adhesive. The result is a much denser board, less prone to chipping and breaking. Medium Density Fiberboards (MDFs) are manufactured using this method.
3. Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF)
The most popular type of fiberboard, this type of wood is durable thanks to its strong and dense structure. It is also cheaper compared to solidwood, so it is usually used for flat surfaces, like dining and office tables.
4. Plywood or Laminated Board
Plywood is very strong thanks to how it is manufactured. Produced by sandwiching multiple layers of wood veneers to create a smooth, sturdy and solid board. Popular in flooring industries due to its strength and resistance to warping.
5. Veneer
Veneer is usually a thin piece of natural wood shaved from a tree and bonded with MDF, chipboard or plywood. Typically used in surfaces because natural wood is resistant to stains and water. Also preferred by manufacturers as it creates a natural wood finish.
