6 Tips on How to Spot High-Quality Furniture for Your Home
Naturally, we want the best furniture items for our home. We always ask for recommendations from our family and friends on what would be the best quality of furniture to pick for our home. We sometimes have second thoughts in buying high-quality furniture because we think it is too expensive or not budget-friendly. Fortunately, not all high-quality products are expensive, and there are a lot of them out there that are high-quality, yet budget-friendly.
We may have our own personal preferences and style when it comes to furniture, but we need to consider some basic factors before buying furniture items. Here are the tips that will help you in purchasing furniture items for your home.
1. The Legs of the Furniture
The most important part of any furniture is its legs. Even though your bed or sofa has an incredible design, you have to make sure those legs are strong and durable. Avoid purchasing furniture with plastic legs, most of them are usually weak, and some can scratch the floor. Legs made from wood is the best choice for high-quality furniture because it has the capacity to handle heavy objects and can last long with proper maintenance. If the legs still damage the floor, we recommend you to buy slider pads that are made of soft rubber or fabric.
2. Variety of Wood Furniture
There are a lot of furniture styles being produced to the public and are made from different kinds of materials like wood. The typical types of wood that are used for furniture are solid wood, composite wood, and veneers.
Pieces of furniture made out of solid wood are prone to scratches, water rings, and are known for their durability that’s why they are quite expensive. Next is composite wood or particleboard, they are made from a variety of materials from wood pulp, resin, plastic, etc., and they are cheaper than solid wood. Last is veneers, which is wood-based and is covered by several thin layers of good quality woods. Out of the three typical types of wood used for furniture, this is the most budget-friendly.
3. Check the Cushions
Choose a cushion that is firm and that can last long. Always touch the seats to feel the firmness of the cushion. A good suggestion is to get a cushion with a removable cover, so you can change the covers monthly. Also, make sure those firm cushions are easy to wash.
4. Test the Springs
If you’re into soft and squeaky sofas or bed, choose a cushion that has springs in it. To know if the spring cushions are high-quality, try sitting on it and feel it. If the spring cushion made a sound, it means the furniture is not in good quality. Another red flag of poor quality spring cushion is when you push it down and it doesn’t spring back into place.
There are two types of spring cushion in the market, one is the traditional coiled spring that makes the sofa and bed look firmer. And the other is zig zag coiled springs which brings a softer feel for your sofa and bed that makes you want to dive on your bed.
5. Examine Cabinet and Drawer
We are all annoyed when our cabinet’s door makes a sound, and our drawers are not in good condition. Before purchasing cabinets or drawers, always test them by opening and closing them multiple times. Try to inspect if it is too loose when you open it or if it is too tight. Don’t forget to check the handles, make sure they are attached well on the cabinet’s’ door and the drawer’s pull.
6. Choose Neutral Colors
Be wise when choosing colors for your furniture. Sometimes you think the color of the item you buy matches your house, but on some accounts, it doesn’t really do justice to your target theme. Most people don’t like bold colors and most of the time it will look different in your home. Choose neutral colors or earth tone colors because it will last longer and can blend with the style you want for your home. If you still want a bold furniture color, we suggest that you use them as an accent on your furniture, like colorful pillows on your sofa.
